Garcia's Comments Draw Criticism from Belgian FA
Rudi Garcia, appointed as Belgium's national team coach in January 2025, is facing widespread controversy following his recent statements. This comes despite his positive record, which includes qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and maintaining Belgium's place in Division A of the UEFA Nations League, achieved after a 3-0 home victory over Ukraine, following a 3-1 away defeat.
Garcia sparked the controversy by publicly supporting coach Nicky Hayen following his dismissal from Belgian club Club Brugge. Garcia stated: "It is illogical to dismiss a coach who has achieved great things, managed to bring out the best in his team, and achieved results in the Champions League. We need Belgian coaches like him."
Following these statements, the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) issued a public reprimand to Garcia, noting: "The Federation did not appreciate Rudi Garcia's statement. In the face of the national coach's criticism of Club Brugge regarding Nicky Hayen's dismissal, it is reminded that such a decision exclusively concerns the parties involved and was an internal club matter, as is the case in other similar situations."
Meanwhile, Belgian media outlets, including Philippe Albert and Marc Degryse, criticized the FA's reaction, describing it as an unnecessary controversy.
