Zambia Maintains Africa Cup of Nations Penalty Record in Morocco
The Zambian national football team has continued its impressive record of not conceding a goal from a penalty kick in the Africa Cup of Nations since 2012, despite facing five attempts.
The latest of these attempts occurred last Wednesday in Morocco, where Zambian goalkeeper Willard Mwanza successfully saved a penalty taken by Mali striker Bilal Touré in the 42nd minute of the match.
This save marks the fifth consecutive penalty missed against Zambia in the continental competition, underscoring the team's defensive resilience from the spot.
Previously, Asamoah Gyan (Ghana, 2012) and Saladin Ahmed (Ethiopia, 2013) both missed penalties that were saved by Zambian goalkeepers, while Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast, 2012) and John Obi Mikel (Nigeria, 2013) shot their penalties wide of the goal.
Thus, three penalties have been saved and two have been shot off target, ensuring the Zambian national team has kept a clean sheet from penalty kicks for over a decade.
