Völler Stresses Ter Stegen's Need for Regular Play Ahead of World Cup
Rudi Völler, the sporting director for the German national team, emphasized the necessity for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen to play regularly to secure his position as Germany's first-choice goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup.
Ter Stegen had been sidelined for four months due to back surgery. Following his return, he lost his starting spot at Barcelona to teammate Joan García, with coach Hansi Flick preferring the latter.
In this regard, Völler stated, “It doesn't matter if he stays at Barcelona or goes somewhere else; ultimately, he has to play.” German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann had conveyed a similar message earlier.
Despite reports suggesting a potential loan move, Ter Stegen intends to remain at Barcelona due to a custody battle, which complicates his chances of playing in matches and impacts his World Cup aspirations.
