Riyad Mahrez Becomes Algeria's All-Time AFCON Top Scorer
Riyad Mahrez has achieved a new historic milestone, becoming the all-time leading scorer for the Algerian national team in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This accomplishment came after he scored two goals in his country's 3-0 victory over Sudan.
With these goals, Mahrez increased his tally to eight goals in the history of the continental competition, surpassing the previous record of six goals held by Lakhdar Belloumi. Mahrez was also named Man of the Match in the game where he achieved this record.
Mahrez's eight goals have been distributed across four different editions of the tournament: one goal in 2015, two in 2017, three in 2019, and two in the current edition, thereby ending a six-year goal drought in the competition.
In addition to these achievements, Riyad Mahrez ranks second among the most-capped players for the Algerian national team, with 108 international appearances.
