Lyon Announces Saël Kumbedi's Permanent Transfer to Wolfsburg

26 December 2025at03:50

French club Olympique Lyonnais announced on Monday the permanent transfer of their 20-year-old right-back Saël Kumbedi to German club VfL Wolfsburg, following the latter's decision to activate the buy option in the player's contract.

The deal is valued at €6 million, in addition to potential bonuses that could reach €2 million. Lyon will also retain a 10% sell-on clause from any future profit should the player be re-sold. Olympique Lyonnais stated: "Olympique Lyonnais thanks Saël for his commitment and exemplary attitude at the club and wishes him all the best in Germany."

Kumbedi joined Olympique Lyonnais in September 2022 from Le Havre and has since participated in 62 matches for Lyon across all competitions. He also made 10 appearances for Wolfsburg this season, indicating he was on loan prior to the permanent move.

In other news, Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen will be sidelined for several months due to a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Regarding potential defensive reinforcements, coach Hansi Flick stated: "I will speak with Deco on Monday."

Elsewhere, 41-year-old Thiago Silva has joined Porto on a six-month contract with an option for an additional season. Luis Castro, recently dismissed from his coaching role at Nantes, has been appointed as the new manager of Levante. Reports also suggest that Nice is interested in signing Frankfurt striker Elyes Wahi.
