South Africa Coach Hugo Broos Faces Racism and Sexism Allegations
Belgian coach Hugo Broos, 73, has recently guided the South African national team, "Bafana Bafana," to significant achievements. He led the team to the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (finishing third) for the first time in 23 years and also secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, his reputation has been marred by accusations of racism and sexism.
On December 12, during a press conference, Broos made a controversial statement concerning player Mkhize Mkhokazi. He reportedly said, “Even if this boy is black, when he leaves my office, he will be white, because I cannot accept this kind of behavior.”
He also directed sharp criticism at player agent Basia Michaels, stating, “This young girl thinks she knows something about football. If she were a little smart, she would have waited until the end of the Africa Cup and even the World Cup to receive offers from other teams.”
Ngqabayomzi Kwankwa, leader of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) party, condemned these statements, describing them as “racist and sexist.” Broos later apologized for his comments, which he characterized as “inappropriate.” It is worth noting that the South African national team had recently defeated Angola 2-1 during the recent Africa Cup of Nations.
